This year’s PhotoWeekend takes place at B.L.O. Ateliers, where, more than ever, PhotoWeekend brings together Berlin’s vibrant analog photography scene.

The main exhibition, themed “Contact,” showcases a curated selection of works by artists, reflecting diverse interpretations of connection and interaction through analog photography.

New additions to our workshop program provide hands-on experiences offer participants the opportunity to explore alternative techniques such as Cyanotype and Eco Developing, alongside traditional analog processes. This year’s expanded program also includes portfolio reviews, live demos, and engaging “Show & Tell” sessions, fostering an interactive and dynamic environment for learning, networking, and artistic exchange.

PhotoWeekend at B.L.O. Ateliers promises to be an inspiring space for both seasoned photographers and newcomers, celebrating the artistry and craft of analog photography in all its forms.

MAIN EXHIBITION

CONTACT

The theme of this group exhibition is CONTACT—a word that has taken on new significance over the past year, whether in a technical, physical, or social sense. For analog photographers, contact is already a fundamental concept: from film and wet plate to paper, the interaction between light and a light-sensitive emulsion marks the moment of artistic creation.

Curated from submissions to our open call, the exhibition brings together European and international artists who explore CONTACT through diverse perspectives. Their interpretations offer a multi-layered exploration of the theme, inviting visitors into a dynamic discourse. The selected works showcase a compelling range of techniques and styles in contemporary analog photography, creating an exhibition that is both rich in tradition and forward-looking in its artistic vision.

SHOW & TELL

Show & Tell is a dynamic gathering where analog photographers and artists come together to share their projects with an engaged audience. Each participant has 20 minutes to present their work—whether as prints laid out on a table, a self-published fanzine, a carefully crafted photobook, or images projected onto the wall.

More than just a presentation, Show & Tell is an opportunity for dialog. After each session, there is dedicated time for discussion, feedback, and exchange, allowing artists and attendees to connect, reflect, and inspire one another. Whether you are an artist looking to share your vision or a visitor eager to engage with contemporary analog photography, Show & Tell fosters an open and interactive space for creative exploration.

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS

The analogueNOW Portfolio Review offers photographers the chance to discuss their work or projects with experts in the field. Whether presenting analog, digital, or mixed media, participants receive valuable feedback tailored to their artistic vision.

Open to anyone seeking inspiration, professional exchange, or networking, the review provides a supportive space for refining ideas, exploring new directions, and gaining insights to further artistic growth.

This year, our reviewers will choose the best analog portfolio to be featured in the next issue of PhotoKlassik Magazine AND to be shown at the upcoming Rotlicht Festival group exhibition

MEET THIS YEAR’S REVIEWERS

Nuša Hernavs

Nuša Hernavs is a Slovenian freelance photographer and photo editor based in Berlin, Germany. She creates photography, works on bespoke projects, and collaborates with like minded artists.
Fashion culture, raw emotions and exposed everyday situations have been a major influence on her work, and is a frequent theme throughout her photography.
Her recent collaborations include Savage Fenty, KALTBLUT Magazine, RARO Magazine, ReadyMade Atu Gelovani, Side by Side Vintage Berlin, along with artists Dollface, Dj Rebekah, WIP Project Melbourne, designer Mykke Hofmann, and a wide range of artists and designers.
She completed her studies in 2019 at the renowned Ostkreuz School for Photography in Berlin, Germany as a photo editor and recently held an exhibition at U10 Art space in Belgrade, Serbia. Besides her photography work she is the cofounder of Gravymagazine.
Prior to her studies in Berlin, Hernavs holds an MA in Sociology of Culture, which she completed in Slovenia at the Academy of Arts. Shortly after completing her MA, she realized she was more curious about art and photography, rather than sociology and academia. She took her interest further by working in production for various photo festivals and festivals for upcoming young artists such as Fotopub Slovenia, Festival of Analog Photography analogueNOW! Berlin, Germany.

Felix Hawran

Felix Hawran has been a media educator and project manager at Kulturring in Berlin e. V. since 2010. Since 2015, he has managed Fotogalerie Friedrichshain, the first and only official gallery for photography in the GDR – since 1985 at the same location near S-Bhf. Warschauer Straße. The numerous curated exhibitions include “30 Years of Fotogalerie Friedrichshain” as well as “One Day in Berlin – 30 Years Later” and “Blind Date”. Miriam Zlobinski

Miriam Zlobinski is a historian with a focus on visual history and works as a freelance curator and photo editor. She is a lecturer at the UdK and part of the chief editorial team of ReVue – Magazine for Photography and Perception.

She is writing her doctoral thesis on the political image in photojournalism in the old Federal Republic.

Dino Rekanović

As a quite indecisive person, he has been drifting between the roles of photographer, artist, curator, gallery owner, instructor and mediator in the cultural sector for many years. The common denominator was always the affection for the medium of photography. Waiting for Godot, he uses historical wooden cameras as well as ultra-modern devices, always diversifying and with the intend of alienation. The preferred technique is the wet-plate collodion process.

In the last two decades he has launched several initiatives and art associations. Since 2020 he has been the initiator and managing director of the international festival Rotlicht Festival for analog photography in Vienna.

Kati Bruder

Kati Bruder (1978, Graz) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (graduated in 2015), where Peter Kodera taught her how to use a camera. Since 2003 she has been working as a freelance photographer with a focus on portraits. In her photo series Kati Bruder explores the ambiguity of visibility, searching for answers to the following questions: how do our social status and gender affect our visual perception? What are we allowed to see by whom? What role is played by the symbolic significance of the gaze and what poses do we strike as soon as a camera is pointed at us?

Kati Bruder lives in Vienna and works internationally. Among other accolades, she was awarded the Austrian State Scholarship for Artistic Photography in 2017 and in 2015 the Advancement of Photography Prize by the City of Graz, the Audience Award at the Wiesbadner Fototage, and the commendation of the ‘architekturbild’ European Architectural Photography Prize. Exhibitions at home and abroad include: MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna; Museum of Photography/Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin; DAM – Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt; Clervaux – cité de l’image, Luxembourg; Literature Museum, Odessa; StageOne, Zurich; Arebit Gallery and Getty Images Gallery, London; Alkatraz Galerija, Ljubljana.

Carmen Brunner

Carmen Brunner has an educational background in photography, english language and literature and media studies. She was a publication manager and photo editor for artist Wolfgang Tillmans, where she assisted with picture editing, design and production of photo books and magazine contributions. From 2011 she was the chief photo editor for the german magazine Dummy and not much later took over the same position at Fluter, the magazine of the German Federal Agency for Civic Education. After leaving Dummy and Fluter in 2018 she worked as a visual and conceptual consultant and photo editor for several agencies, projects and editorial offices. Since 2020 she does Swiss weekly Das Magazin.

Roland Behrmann

After school Roland Behrmann (*1954 in Dessau) started an apprenticeship with his Master in Dessau. After the period at Leipzig and Halle he became a professinal photographer. After a period of teaching at University he also took a degree in History of arts, History and German in 2010 at Heidelberg. He writes also philology articles about photography theories and lives in Berlin with his Family.

WORKSHOPS

As in previous years, workshops and presentations will be a key part of PhotoWeekend. Analog photography thrives on its diverse techniques and the skilled individuals who practice them. Alongside beginner workshops, there will once again be specialized sessions on alternative techniques such as Cyanotype and Eco Developing. For beginners and those looking to return to analog photography, the darkroom workshops provide ideal training in developing and enlarging both black-and-white and color photographs.

PRESENTATIONS & LIVE DEMOS

Another highlight of the weekend will be presentations showcasing innovative techniques processes. From self-built cameras and creative photo papers to unconventional imaging processes, the analog scene is bursting with ingenuity and passion. In addition to the artistic program, a manufacturers’ and institutions’ fair will bring together traditional industry leaders and emerging companies, all eager to present their latest advancements. This fair offers a unique opportunity for the analog industry to connect with the public, share their expertise, and inspire a new generation of enthusiasts.

Camera Minutera Berlin – Artur Kowallick

Call it Afghan box camera, Kamra-e-faoree or camera minutera, this is a device to behold. And the experience of being portrayed by it, something you shouldn’t miss out! Don’t worry, analogueNOW! and Camera Minutera Berlin give you the chance this PhotoWeekend 2021!

Wet Plate – Maximilian Zeitler

No filter needed – experience a portrait like back in the beginnings of photography: the wet plate collodion process. Handcrafted on black aluminum with silver and light, the tintype is one of a kind. During the analogueNOW! festival, you can book a 4×5“ portrait and get yourself a living fossile.

Schlomographen

Are you ready for a new Schlomographische Aktion? Will they show us their home-made, edible photo lenses in different flavors? Or their hand-made polaroids? Or maybe this time they will portrait your aura? One thing is for sure: the Schlomographen never disappoint!

Screen Printing workshop – Betty Jungwirth

Yes, we could sell T-Shirts with our logo, but… What is the analog way? Isn’t it way more analog to print it YOURSELF? Betty from B.L.O. shows you how! Take the results home with you and learn a new analog skill!

Dresdner Schmalfilmtage

After more than 20 editions is the Dresdner Schmalfilmtage one of the oldest festivals specializing in analog cinema in Europe. And we are lucky enough to have them this PhotoWeekend as a guests! The Dresdners are taking over our screening, don’t miss out!

EXP.21

EXP.21 is the festival for experimental photography in Barcelona. In their own words: EXP.21 aims to create, promote and disseminate experimental photography in all its forms. EXP.21 considers it essential to create an international community of artists that can support each other, recognize each other from equality, and create shared projects. WOW!

Revela-T

Our brothers and sisters of Revela-T run the oldest analog photography festival (at least that we know of) in Vilassar de Dalt, near Barcelona. More than 60 exhibitions, market, portfolio reviews, artist in residence, workshops and a program that will make your socks drop on the spot. Here’s the chance to meet them, you shouldn’t miss out!

Rotlicht

Rotlicht is the 1st international festival for contemporary analog photography in Vienna. With their theme ‘Hybrid’ they ask the question: What is analog photography in 2021? They bring surprises and thrilling plans, so don’t miss their presentation!
