This year’s PhotoWeekend takes place in the Schillerkiez neighborhood in Berlin-Neukölln. With a new location comes a new concept. More than ever, PhotoWeekend brings together the contemporary Berlin analog scene.

The main venue is the church of the Ev. Kirchengemeinde Genezareth on Herrfurthplatz. Those familiar with it know that the church and the Startbahn e.V. serve as an important cultural center in Schillerkiez, offering their spaces to many creators. For PhotoWeekend, the church transforms into an oasis for analog photography, with most of the program taking placethere.

The program features a diverse range of activities celebrating analog photography. A central group exhibition showcases work from emerging and established artists, while satellite exhibitions spread throughout the neighborhood, organized in collaboration with various collectives and labs. Workshops offer hands-on experiences with different analog processes, allowing participants to experiment and learn from experts. Additionally, portfolio reviews providephotographers with valuable feedback and networking opportunities, making PhotoWeekend not just an exhibition but a dynamic space for learning and exchange.

MAIN EXHIBITION

REVELATION

The exhibition brings together projects that reveal unseen, unfamiliar, or undocumented stories, as well as projects that make the photographic act of revealing their subject. The exhibition will explore the alleged transparency, indexicality of analog photography, as well as the social and political role that comes with it.

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS

The analogueNOW Portfolio Review gives photographers the opportunity to discuss a selection of their own work or a project with experts in the field of photography. You decide if you want to bring analog, digital or mixed media work. The offer is directed to everybody who needs inspiration, are seeking an exchange and a networking opportunity or just want to discuss their work in private.

MEET THIS YEAR’S REVIEWERS

Katri Lassila

Katri Lassila is a photographic artist specialized in gelatin silver printing and hybrid techniques combining analog photography and other media. She wrote her artistic doctoral thesis in 2023 for Aalto University, Department of Film, about the temporal aspects of landscape between photography and cinema. She is the president and one of the founding members of the Finnish Darkroom Association and the director of the Symposium for Artistic Research in Analog Photography for Helsinki Darkroom Festival. She teaches darkroom courses regularly for the association as well as for the Aalto University Department of Media. She has had over 20 individual exhibits in Finland and abroad since 1999 and she has taken part in several group and juried exhibits as well as worked as a jury member for international exhibitions.

Felix Hawran

Felix Hawran has been a media educator and project manager at Kulturring in Berlin e. V. since 2010. Since 2015, he has managed Die Fotogalerie Friedrichshain, the first and only official gallery for photography in the GDR – since 1985 at the same location near S-Bhf. Warschauer Straße. The numerous curated exhibitions include “30 Years of Fotogalerie Friedrichshain” as well as “One Day in Berlin – 30 Years Later” and “Blind Date”. In 2016, he initiated the workshop and exhibition series “Jugend fotografiert” to promote young talent.
Background of his work is his study in Literary, Cultural and Media Sciences (B. A.)

Sasho Alushevski

Sasho Alushevski lives in Skopje, Macedonia. He teaches photography in Macedonia and throughout the world. Co founder of MakeDox – creative documentary film festival, and initiator of Zrno-international festival of alternative photography. His work has been exhibited in over 80 group exhibitions worldwide and awarded numerous prices.

Katarzyna Gębarowska

Katarzyna Gębarowska is a curator and researcher of photography based in Poland. She’s a PhD candidate at the Institute of Art in Warsaw and holds a Master degree of Gender Studies from Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

Since 2015, she has been the director of the Vintage Photo Festival.

Her focus is on photographic archives, analog photography, and herstory. She is a co-author of several books on forgotten female photographers, including the most recent one titled “A World History of Women Photographers,” published by Thames & Hudson in London in 2022.

Michael Laubsch

Michael Laubsch is the program coordinator of ROTLICHT, the festival for analog photography in Vienna.

As an analog photographer, Michael’s work focuses on reportage, documentation of social interaction and deals a lot with the heart of Europe, which for him is based in the East and South East of our continent.

WORKSHOPS

The workshops take place in cooperation with Jochen Rohner in Ackerstraße, the collective Fotografie in Berlin e.V. in Mainzer Straße, and Sabine Alex from the mobile darkroom on-site at Herrfurthplatz. The curriculum is designed for both beginners and advanced photographers, covering fine art darkroom enlargement and alternative photo processes such as cyanotype. Workshop lecturers include Sabine Alex, Markus Kaesler, Jochen Rohner, Jan Nordsieck, Antje Kroeger, Justin Quinnell, and Sehera Nawaz. This year, we also offer a series of presentations with limited capacity, scheduled between workshops.

HUMAN, MATERIAL, MOMENT / 13×18 NEGATIVE DEVELOPMENT ON PAPER

“Many photographic processes are expensive and/or quite environmentally unfriendly. That’s why I load the cassettes of my beloved DDR-Mentor large format camera directly with photo paper. This is how I photograph my artistic series, and this is what I will show you at this workshop. In the practical part, each of you will produce your own so-called paper negatives with the large format camera. No paper is
bought new. It comes to me from various sources. The procurement of my materials is the first creative process of my work.

Today you get to be creative together with the group. Photograph your fellow workshop participants. Self-portraits are also possible. Together we load the cassettes in the darkroom with the paper, together we discover the old large format camera. I support you with the individual steps of the photo-artistic process of creation. At the end we go to the darkroom to develop the paper negatives. Because in principle this analog process is an instant photo process. You can then hold your work in your hands and, of course, take them home.” — Antje Kröger

WORKSHOP EXPERIMENTAL

Photo paper has a light-sensitive layer – the emulsion. In this workshop you will learn how to bring the emulsion to an absorbent carrier material and use it like photographic paper after drying. Photographic images will be created on wood, cardboard and fabric. The attractive thing is the interaction of the graphic character of the photograph and the structure and color of the carrier material.

TWO-COLOR CYANOTYPE

Cyanotype is an old analog photo printing technique developed in 1842. Instead of silver grains – as in the classical black/white-photography – one develops very stable pigments in prussian blue (or berlin blue). Also: one only needs water for the fixation and the chemicals are in most concentrations nontoxic for the environment and yourself.
This course will focus on printing two colored Cyanotypes. You will be able to print your own Photo and experiment with color variants and toning.
Even if you have expeirance in printing Cyanotypes, this course can be very interesting for you.

THE HOLE WORLD – AWFULLOGRAMMES

A 2 hour pinhole adventure of beer can pinhole photography featuring: the ‘I-can’ camera, awfullogrammes and solargraphy.

FILMING AND TRICKING WITH THE BOLEX ON 16MM FILM

A little experiment and trick, a little Dada! In this year’s film workshop we grab a mechanical Bolex, the camera that has been known worldwide for decades and to this day as a small Swiss army knife by avant-garde filmmakers, as well as by students and passionate amateurs to adventurers far away from civilization. It is so well known because it offers far more possibilities than just filming. Using Dadaist approaches to poetry production, we will come up with ideas for a small short film, which we will then shoot and later develop. We will try to figure out and apply all the little tricks and possibilities of the camera from multiple exposures to time lapse and stretching to double shots and much more. The workshop focuses on experimenting with the camera, exploring its possibilities and those of the medium of film, tricking and playing. And when the film has dried after developing, there is a small screening. The workshop is aimed at beginners as well as advanced users. Filming and developing skills are helpful but not essential.

ENLARGING OF BLACK & WHITE NEGATIVES (ADVANCED)

Advanced enlarging of your own BLACK/WHITE negatives (fibre-base paper, barite paper) This course is aimed at people who have already enlarged images from their own negatives in the darkroom and now want to move to the next level. The basic knowledge of photochemistry and the function of aperture and time and graduation should be known.

Bring examples! And bring your own SW negatives to enlarge.

The aim is to be able to develop your own photos professionally and without errors and to be able to recognize errors yourself.

BLACK & WHITE FILM DEVELOPMENT (ADVANCED)

CREATIVE PAINTING ON NEGATIVES + SCANNING PROCESS

In the workshop we experiment with color and black and white 35mm negatives. We paint the emulsion side and scan the result. Then the negative-positive conversion in Photoshop is explained with color adjustment.
