Analog photography is more than just film in an old camera—it’s a vibrant, evolving art form. analogueNOW! invites you to Germany’s biggest platform for contemporary analog photography, where creativity meets community. From May 17 to May 19, 2019, join us for an inspiring weekend filled with workshops, exhibitions, artist talks, and hands-on experiences at the BLO-Ateliers in Berlin.

This year’s theme, “Material,” challenges us to explore the essence of analog photography. What does material mean to you? Is it the physical medium—film, paper, or chemicals? Is it a conceptual foundation, shaping your artistic vision? Or is it a technical tool, blending tradition with innovation? Experience how photographers engage with materiality—documenting, shaping, and reinterpreting it—through a curated group exhibition and special solo shows.

We are honored to have renowned photographer Harald Hauswald—co-founder of the Ostkreuz photo agency and recipient of the Federal Cross—as this year’s patron.

We are delighted to host the event at B.L.O. Ateliers, where artists and artisans will open their studio doors for the weekend. Feel free to explore and visit them!

MATERIAL

We are excited to showcase the works of 15 artists selected through an open call launched earlier this year. Their projects explore photographic material from diverse perspectives, inviting us to reflect on the essence of analog photography.

SOLO EXHIBITIONS

NILS KARLSON

Nils Karlson is a fine art photographer based in Bochum, Germany. His work explores the experience of time through the medium of photography. With a background as a foley editor and musician, he examines the fragile moments of silence between sounds—the pauses between actions. Using his camera, Karlson strives to create the quietest photography possible, driven by a deep passion for color and light.

Since 2015, his work has been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe and the U.S. His photographs have also been published in both print and online media. In 2016, he released his first book, followed by a magazine titled Eyes Like Slumber, available at the festival and online for €25.

About the Exhibition

In November and December 2018, I had the opportunity to participate in the Listhus Artist Residency program in Ólafsfjörður, Iceland. During winter, Ólafsfjörður remains untouched by direct sunlight for nine weeks—I experienced four of them.

On my solitary journeys, I encountered multiple forms of silence: the hush of low-intensity sound, the pauses between noises, the absence of sound, and an even deeper silence—one where the last remnants of noise are muffled and absorbed by countless snowflakes drifting through the air and settling on the ground.

RIA WANK

When using my favored analog technique, the “Film Soup”, analog films are inserted into or cooked in all kinds of liquids to receive a coloring effect. I always asked myself how I can control this process and how I can recreate a random coincidence. So I started to keep record and studied how 35mm film reacts in different conditions over many stages of development, that lasted sometimes over several years. The material is the 35mm film, the composition of the cocktail and the development process. Together they react very differently in different conditions.

The selection of the material is the starting point of my work, the process is in the center of it, as the process is the symbiose of material, chemistry, time, temperature and all the small details that influence the image in its development process.

The main exhibit, “Lightbox”, shows 48 originals of a E6 35mm film, cooked with “Berliner Weiße” (original Berlin style beer). After a resting phase of 3 months the film was developed in classical fashion and partly further treated and lightened with chlorine bleach.

The two big exhibits show a similar experiment but with C41 film. The film was lightly cooked in “Berliner Weiße” beer for 5 minutes and after a 6 hour resting phase developed straight away. The whole series with Berliner Weiße consists of an 18 month study with over 60 35mm films. In my experiments all films are NOT exposed with light.

SHOW & TELL

Show & Tell is a dynamic gathering where analog photographers and artists come together to share their projects with an engaged audience. Each participant has 20 minutes to present their work—whether as prints laid out on a table, a self-published fanzine, a carefully crafted photobook, or images projected onto the wall.

More than just a presentation, Show & Tell is an opportunity for dialog. After each session, there is dedicated time for discussion, feedback, and exchange, allowing artists and attendees to connect, reflect, and inspire one another. Whether you are an artist looking to share your vision or a visitor eager to engage with contemporary analog photography, Show & Tell fosters an open and interactive space for creative exploration.

The analogueNOW Portfolio Review offers photographers the chance to discuss their work or projects with experts in the field. Whether presenting analog, digital, or mixed media, participants receive valuable feedback tailored to their artistic vision.

Open to anyone seeking inspiration, professional exchange, or networking, the review provides a supportive space for refining ideas, exploring new directions, and gaining insights to further artistic growth.

MEET THIS YEAR’S REVIEWERS

Nuša Hernavs

Nuša Hernavs is a Slovenian freelance photographer and photo editor based in Berlin, Germany. She creates photography, works on bespoke projects, and collaborates with like minded artists.
Her recent collaborations include Savage Fenty, KALTBLUT Magazine, RARO Magazine, ReadyMade Atu Gelovani, Side by Side Vintage Berlin, along with artists Dollface, Dj Rebekah, WIP Project Melbourne, designer Mykke Hofmann, and a wide range of artists and designers.
She completed her studies in 2019 at the renowned Ostkreuz School for Photography in Berlin, Germany as a photo editor and recently held an exhibition at U10 Art space in Belgrade, Serbia. Besides her photography work she is the cofounder of Gravymagazine.

Carmen Brunner

Carmen Brunner has an educational background in photography, english language and literature and media studies. She was a publication manager and photo editor for artist Wolfgang Tillmans, where she assisted with picture editing, design and production of photo books and magazine contributions. From 2011 she was the chief photo editor for the german magazine Dummy and not much later took over the same position at Fluter, the magazine of the German Federal Agency for Civic Education. After leaving Dummy and Fluter in 2018 she worked as a visual and conceptual consultant and photo editor for several agencies, projects and editorial offices. Since 2020 she does Swiss weekly Das Magazin.

Betty Fink

Betty Fink works as a free photo project manager, teaches photography and photo editing and does photography coaching. She has an extensive experience of 20 years working in various fields of photography. In those years she experienced working with magazines, exhibitions and many instituions and foundations. Fink is also a former manager of Photo Agency Ostkreuz, where she has worked for several years. Her work in the Agency included work with many important photographers from fields of photojournalism, documentary and art photography.

Caro Bräuer

Caro Bräuer is one of the founders of the analogueNOW! festival for analog photography in Berlin. In recent years she has worked in various photographic projects. She has a photography and photo editing background. One of her current favorite topics is the photobook and social issues combined with photography.

WORKSHOPS

As in previous years, workshops and presentations will be a key part of PhotoWeekend. Analog photography thrives on its diverse techniques and the skilled individuals who practice them. Alongside beginner workshops, there will once again be specialized sessions on alternative techniques such as Cyanotype and Eco Developing. For beginners and those looking to return to analog photography, the darkroom workshops provide ideal training in developing and enlarging both black-and-white and color photographs.

Schwarz-Weiß-Filmentwicklung

Entdecken Sie die Welt der Schwarz-Weiß-Filmentwicklung in der Dunkelkammer. Zusammen mit anderen Teilnehmern lernen Sie, wie man einen Schwarzweißfilm entwickelt, wobei Sie jeden Schritt des Prozesses verfolgen: Entwickeln, Wässern, Trocknen und Archivieren. Erleben Sie den magischen Moment, wenn Sie Ihren selbstentwickelten Film aus dem Entwicklertank nehmen, um zu sehen, wie Ihre Bilder aussehen. Lernen Sie die Tricks der Dunkelkammer unter professioneller Anleitung. Im Anschluss an diesen Workshop können Sie einen weiteren Workshop zum Thema Schwarzweißdruck besuchen, um den nächsten Schritt zu machen. Bitte bringen Sie einen belichteten S/W-Film mit (z.B. Ilford HP5, FP4, Kodak Tri-X 400, Kodak T-Max 100 und 400, APX 100 und 400, Fomapan 100, 200, 400, Adox Silvermax, usw.) Sie haben keinen belichteten Film zu Hause? Kein Problem - nehmen Sie einfach an einem der Fotowalks des Festivals teil und lernen Sie, wie man einen Schwarzweißfilm selbst belichtet.

Schwarz-Weiß-Druck

Entdecken Sie die Welt des Schwarz-Weiß-Fotodrucks in der Dunkelkammer. Gemeinsam mit anderen Teilnehmern lernen Sie, wie man ein Schwarzweiß-Positiv auf Negativ-Fotopapier druckt, wie man es entwickelt und wie man es trocknet. Erleben Sie den magischen Moment, in dem das Bild erscheint, während es langsam in der Entwicklerschale schwimmt. Lernen Sie die Tricks der Dunkelkammerarbeit unter professioneller Anleitung. Bitte bringen Sie S/W-Negative von 35mm oder Mittelformat mit. Sie haben keine eigenen Negative? Kein Problem! Nehmen Sie einfach an einem unserer Festival-Fotowalks teil und lernen Sie selbst, wie man S/W-Film belichtet. Beim anschließenden Workshop zur S/W-Filmentwicklung nach dem Fotowalk können Sie direkt lernen, wie Sie den Film selbst entwickeln.

Cyanotype

Die Cyanotypie ist eine alte analoge Fotodrucktechnik, die 1842 entwickelt wurde. Anstelle von Silberkörnern - wie in der klassischen Schwarz/Weiß-Fotografie - entwickelt man sehr stabile Pigmente in Preußischblau (oder Berlinblau). Außerdem: Man braucht nur Wasser für die Fixierung und die Chemikalien sind in den meisten Konzentrationen ungiftig für die Umwelt und für einen selbst. So kann man sich ganz auf den künstlerischen Prozess konzentrieren.

In 3 spannenden Stunden lernen Sie diese kreative Technik kennen und drucken Ihre eigenen Fotos auf verschiedenen Papieren. Nach dem Druck können die Bilder mit Kaffee oder Tee getönt werden. Ihre Bilder erscheinen in einem anderen Licht und Sie nehmen nicht nur Ihr Kunstwerk, sondern auch viel Wissen über alternative Fotografie mit.

Lochkamera DIY

Fotos mit einer Kaffeedose machen? Unmöglich? Ganz und gar nicht! Wenn man die Grundprinzipien der Fotografie anwendet, braucht man nur eine schwarze Dose mit einem winzigen Loch und ein lichtempfindliches Fotopapier oder einen Film, um ein Bild aufzunehmen. Bauen Sie Ihre eigene Lochkamera und fangen Sie einzigartige Bilder ein, die Sie später entwickeln werden. Nach dem Workshop werden alle entstandenen Fotos und Kameras präsentiert und bewertet, und danach könnt ihr sie mit nach Hause nehmen!

Photo Walks

In einer Gruppe von anderen Analog-Enthusiasten lernen Sie, wie Sie Konzepte wie Blende, ISO, Verschlusszeit etc. mit Ihrer eigenen analogen Kamera anwenden können. Wir werden das Berliner Stadtbild rund um die BLO-Ateliers als Fotomotiv erkunden. Am Ende werden Sie einen belichteten Schwarz-Weiß-Film mit 36 Bildern haben. Bitte bringen Sie eine analoge Spiegelreflexkamera für das Kleinbildformat oder eine Mittelformatkamera (120) mit.

PRESENTATIONS & LIVE DEMOS

Another highlight of the weekend will be presentations showcasing innovative techniques processes. From self-built cameras and creative photo papers to unconventional imaging processes, the analog scene is bursting with ingenuity and passion. In addition to the artistic program, a manufacturers’ and institutions’ fair will bring together traditional industry leaders and emerging companies, all eager to present their latest advancements. This fair offers a unique opportunity for the analog industry to connect with the public, share their expertise, and inspire a new generation of enthusiasts.

Legograf Jens Werlein – Lecture & Demo

A large format camera made out of legos? Yes! And it’s not the only format! Jens Werlein shows us his Lego Cameras and how to build one yourself.

Christian Klant – Collodion Wet Plate

Invented back in 1851, collodion wet-plates are still one of the most fascinating alternative processes in analog photography. Our expert Christian Klant not only gives a talk, he also celebrates a live shooting with his huge 16×20″ camera!

Call it Afghan box camera, Kamra-e-faoreeor camera minutera, this is a device to behold. And the experience of being portrayed by it, is something you shouldn’t miss out! Don’t worry, analogueNOW! and Camera Minutera Berlin give you the chance this Photo Weekend 2019!

Schlomographen

Schlomographische Aktion Berlin- GÖTTERSPEISE (AMBROSIA) – The Schlomographen show their home-made, edible photo lenses in different flavors. With which they will take portraits on black and white instant film. Each proband receives his/her original image and the lens used (if desired, for inmediate consumption). As always, with authenticity seal and signed.
